ChronoTrace

Build & Test

A package for simple, function-level performance tracing.

Ever found yourself hunting down performance bottlenecks? Manually wrapping methods with Stopwatch code to pinpoint slow sections is tedious and error-prone.

    // ❌ Say goodbye to this:
    var sw = Stopwatch.StartNew();
    var worker = new Worker();
    await worker.DoWork();
    Console.WriteLine($"DoWork took: {sw.Elapsed}");

Installing the package

Easily add ChronoTrace to your project:

dotnet add package ChronoTrace

Using the package

Just decorate the methods you want to trace with the [Profile] attribute, the package handles the rest.

public class Worker
{
    [Profile] // ⬅️ That's it!
    public async Task DoWork()
    {
        // ...
    }
}

Disable code generation

Because the library relies on source generation and intercepting method invocations, runtime toggling of tracing is not supported. Instead, code generation can be turned off using build flags — but note that doing so requires a rebuild each time the setting is changed.

To disable code generation, add the following to your .csproj file:

  <PropertyGroup>

    <ChronoTraceSourceGenerationEnabled>false</ChronoTraceSourceGenerationEnabled>
  </PropertyGroup>

Alternatively, set it as build flag:

dotnet build MyProj.sln -p:ChronoTraceSourceGenerationEnabled=false

Note: build flags override settings in the .csproj!
